Kibungan by The Landrace Team
Philippine Highland Sativa
Kibungan is an indica landrace strain from the highlands of the Philippines, conserved by The Landrace Team. It represents a diverse, open-pollinated population adapted to the unique agro-ecological conditions of the Cordillera region. This strain offers a connection to historical cannabis cultivation practices in Southeast Asia.
Appearance
Kibungan plants are typically tall, narrow-leafed sativas with elongated internodes and a highly branched, upright structure. Mature plants can grow over 2.5 meters outdoors. The open plant frame promotes good airflow, an adaptation to humid climates. Leaves are characteristically slim with 7 to 11 narrow leaflets. Inflorescences are elongated and diffuse, with a favorable calyx-to-leaf ratio, reducing the risk of mold.
Trichome coverage is ample on the calyces and small sugar leaves, giving a frosty appearance at peak ripeness. Pistils usually change from pale white to orange or bronze as the plant matures. Occasional anthocyanin expression may tint sugar leaves and calyces in cooler temperatures.
Aroma & Flavor
The aroma of Kibungan is bright, herbal, and coniferous, often featuring terpinolene-like notes reminiscent of pine forests. Supporting scents include sweet citrus peel, green mango, and lemongrass, reflecting its Southeast Asian origins. Some phenotypes may exhibit faint floral or fruity candy undertones, particularly after curing.
The flavor profile mirrors the aroma, offering a complex blend of herbal, citrus, and tropical fruit notes. The initial taste can be bright and lemony, evolving into sweeter, mango-like nuances with herbal undertones. The bouquet can soften over time, becoming more rounded with slightly musky notes.
Effects
Kibungan is reported to offer a focused experience, aligning with its sativa heritage. While specific effects can vary due to the landrace nature of the strain, it is generally associated with a clear-headed and alert state.
Terpenes & Cannabinoids
Kibungan is a landrace population that likely exhibits chemical variability, potentially expressing multiple chemotypes. It is known to contain terpenes such as Caryophyllene, Pinene, Terpinolene, and Ocimene. These contribute to its distinct aroma and flavor profile. THC levels typically range from 15-25%, with CBD content below 1%.
Growing
As a Philippine highland sativa, Kibungan is adapted to cooler nights and monsoon conditions with high humidity. It prefers stable daylight hours and exhibits a long flowering period. The plant's open structure and mold resilience are key adaptations to wet seasons. Height control and training are recommended for indoor cultivation due to significant sativa stretch during flowering.
Origins & Lineage
Kibungan originates from the mountainous regions of Benguet Province in the northern Philippines. It is a farmer-maintained, open-pollinated sativa population that has adapted over decades to the local highland environment. The Landrace Team has worked to conserve and distribute this genetic material, preserving its original field diversity and equatorial sativa traits.
This strain is not a stabilized hybrid but rather a community-kept archive shaped by natural and farmer selection. Its lineage reflects the broader Southeast Asian gene pool, including Thai, Lao, and Vietnamese highland types, representing a living archive of historical cannabis cultivation.
